What are nouns? A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. Nouns are the building blocks of simple sentences — you will find them as the subject or the object in a sentence.
🔹 Simple Definition
Noun = Name of a person, place, thing or idea.
- Person: mother, teacher, doctor, Riya
- Place: school, park, Mumbai, home
- Thing: book, cup, phone, table
- Idea: love, freedom, happiness
🔸 Types of Nouns (Basic)
1. Common Nouns
General names of people, places or things (not capitalized): city, teacher, book.
2. Proper Nouns
Specific names — always capitalized: Mumbai, Riya, India.
3. Concrete vs Abstract
- Concrete — can be seen/touched: apple, car, house
- Abstract — ideas or feelings: joy, courage, truth
4. Countable & Uncountable (short note)
Countable: one apple, two books. Uncountable: water, milk, rice (no plural form).
5. Collective Nouns (example)
Names for groups: team, family, class.

Ask: Who/What is doing? Who/What is it about? The answers are usually nouns.
Example: The teacher explains the lesson. — Who explains? → teacher (noun, subject). What explains? → lesson (noun, object).
