What is a Sentence? | Basic English Grammar for Beginners

Do you know what makes your English sound complete? The answer is simple — a sentence. Every language uses sentences to express clear thoughts, ideas or feelings. But what exactly is a sentence, and how can you make one correctly?

📘 Definition (Simple Meaning)

A sentence is a group of words that gives a complete meaning or idea. It always starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop (.), question mark (?) or exclamation mark (!).

👉 Example:
She is reading a book.

🧩 Structure of a Simple Sentence

Every sentence in English follows a basic pattern called S–V–O.

  • S = Subject (who or what the sentence is about)
  • V = Verb (the action word)
  • O = Object (the receiver of the action)

🔹 Example:
Riya (S) plays football (O).
Riya plays football.

This simple SVO rule helps you make 90% of your daily English sentences easily.

🗣️ Types of Sentences (Basic)

  1. Declarative Sentence: Gives information.
    He is my friend.
  2. Interrogative Sentence: Asks a question.
    Are you okay?
  3. Imperative Sentence: Gives an order or request.
    Please sit down.
  4. Exclamatory Sentence: Shows strong feeling.
    What a beautiful day!

💡 Quick Tip for Learners

Every time you write a sentence, check two things:

  • ✔ Does it have a subject and a verb?
  • ✔ Does it make a complete sense?

If yes — congratulations! 🎉 You’ve made a correct English sentence.

📝 Practice Time

Make 3 short sentences using the pattern Subject + Verb + Object:

  • 1️⃣ ____________________
  • 2️⃣ ____________________
  • 3️⃣ ____________________

Try simple ones like: I drink tea. She plays guitar. They watch TV.
